Daughters of the Late Colonel: recent wins

We are thrilled to celebrate the recent wins of Daughters of the Late Colonel!

The beautiful short by Elizabeth Hobbs has had a great festival run so far, recently winning Best Animation Short Film at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), and Best International Short Film at the Imaginaria International Auteur Animation Festival in Conversano, Italy. And finally, at the Ottawa Animation Festival, the film won the XPPen Craft Award for Best Animation Technique. Read below for the glowing jury statements.

MIFF jury statement:

‘Brimming with director Elizabeth Hobbs’s distinctive wit, Daughters of the Late Colonel is a captivating adaptation of Katherine Mansfield’s 1920 short story. Hobbs’s richly textured animation gives the film a spare and rhythmic quality, using movement, repetition and visual detail to reveal the inner lives of its two sisters.’

Imaginaria jury statement:

‘The Best International Short Film award goes to a moving film about female emancipation, which radiates hope and joyful defiance. A beautifully constructed film with tantalisingly fleeting artwork, that requires the imagination to fill in the gaps. It’s the soundtrack that creates the reality, making the dancing lines become relatable and believable. In fact, the fluidity of the movement gives the impression that we are watching the film come to life before our eyes, as if we are part of the animation process itself. A wonderful antidote to the relentless perfection of the digital world.’

Ottawa jury statement:

‘For its economic use of mark making to create a vast space open for the imagination to move freely in.’

Big congratulations to the cast and crew. This film was produced by Animate Projects Productions Limited, Phil Davies Films Ltd, and Fabian&Fred GmbH.
