The Debutante wins at SXSW

Just over a year ago, artist Elizabeth Hobbs finished adding the final brushstrokes to her film The Debutante. Following its premiere at Annecy, the film has travelled to more than 50 festivals and received nine awards including the Golden Pegasus at ANIMATOR 2022, Grand Prize at Bucheon International Animation Festival 2022, and most recently the Animated Short Jury Award at SXSW 2023, where the jury said:

In a unique and unapologetic blast of mixed media animation, this bold, bizarre fairy tale is at once hilarious and casually brutal. It affects deeply with a gestural approach to image and sound, and the layered artistry begs for multiple viewings.

The Debutante is also a candidate for the European Short Film Award at the European Film Awards 2023, and upcoming festivals include: Kaboom Animation Festival, REGARD – Saguenay International Short Film Festival, Aspen Shortsfest, Filmfest Dresden, Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, and Animafest Zagreb.

The Debutante is a film by Elizabeth Hobbs, produced by Animate Projects, with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery, and with thanks to the Estate of Leonora Carrington.
